The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (FAIC) issues Emirates ID cards. All UAE nationals and residents are required by law to apply for one and carry it with them at all times. It has a variety of applications. It may be used as identification to access government services, to vote in Federal National Council elections, as a travel document for UAE nationals to travel inside the GCC, and to pass immigration through the e-Gates/Smart Gates at many UAE airports.
